The Future of Bay Area’s Climate

With a population of over 7 million, the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the most populated regions in California. Home to large tech-companies such as Meta and Tesla, it is the industrial powerhouse that unlocks new technologies and advancements every year. Alongside that, the Bay Area is home to over 500 wildlife species. From the California ground squirrel to the blue-eyed coyote, the San Francisco Bay is one of the most biodiverse communities in the country. Whilst the area is very much naturally abundant, it is at risk of a plethora of climate catastrophes.

ABC7 News conducted a study to project what the Bay Area will look like by 2050. The average annual temperature in the Bay could increase as much as “4.4 degrees Fahrenheit under high-emission scenarios” by 2050. This could impact the weather severely, specifically fog. Less of it would mean rising temperatures, something residents have been experiencing for decades. Furthermore, sea level in the Bay has increased over 8 inches in the last century. This poses both a financial and environmental threat to the area, as 90% of homeowners that are likely to experience flooding lack flood insurance. Also, wildfires have consistently increased over time in California. 75% of the state's worst wildfires occurred within the past ten years. 

While these statistics paint a morose outline of what our climate could look like by the next decade, it is important to credit those working towards a more sustainable future. Non-profits and grassroots organizations have gathered support from all over the region, with organizations such as Sierra Club and Citizens’ Climate Lobby gaining more traction than ever before. The South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project has been working on restoring tidal marshes throughout the area, lessening the impact of sea level rise and protecting wildlife. Non-profit organization “Save the Bay” educates those around the community on wetland restoration and nature preservation. “350 Bay Area” is a grassroots climate movement dedicated to fighting for environmental justice and sustainable practices. 

Climate change in the Bay is without a doubt a complex and distressing issue. Whilst it is admirable to see others in our community thrive in the space of climate advocacy, it is of utmost importance that we all devote unwavering attention to the urgent conflict our planet is facing right now. Climate change is an issue that impacts all of us, therefore, it will take all of us to combat it. Afterall, the biggest threat to our climate is the mindset that someone else will take care of it.
